Study of World Healthiest Food organization

A publication of World Healthiest Food organisation, which mentions that the average American person obtains only about 66% of the daily magnesium value. Lack of magnesium plays an important role in depression, chronic inflammation, fatigue, lower parathyroid hormone, which gives less absorption of calcium in intestines and more loss of calcium and magnesium in urine. This study mentions that additionally another 8% of the daily magnesium value can be obtained via supplements if taken. The study further mentions that cooking spinach and kale for 2-3 minutes in water robs these vegetables 20-30% from minerals. Preparing a soup is a better option than cooking in water.

This study discusses the health issues in regards to magnesium deficiency, hypertension, atherio sclerosis, bone metabolism, cardiovascular disease risk etc. The study mentions that up to 68% of people are not taking enough minerals every day. Chapter 10 is recommended to read (Hunter).

Dr Kozisek did an extensive publication on demineraliazed low mineral water. We have also included under articles his lecture given in September 2012 and his excerpt of his new article in 2014 about the quality/value of two researches with regards to this topic.

These are some excerpts of his article, which is located under the chapter 12 of WHO 2005 article. Although calcium and magnesium are not only taken through drinking water and drinking water is not the major source for these minerals, when dietary intake of these minerals is insufficient, use of calcium and magnesium through the use of drinking water can be good for human health.

… Results of experiments in human volunteers evaluated by researchers for the WHO report (3) are in agreement with those in animal experiments and suggest the basic mechanism of the effects of water low in TDS (e.g. < 100 mg/L) on water and mineral homeostasis. Low-mineral water markedly: 1.) increased diuresis (almost by 20%, on average), body water volume, and serum sodium concentrations, 2.) decreased serum potassium concentration, and 3.) increased the elimination of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium ions from the body. … 3. Low intake of some essential elements and microelements from low-mineral water

Although drinking water, with some rare exceptions, is not the major source of essential elements for humans, its contribution may be important for several reasons. The modern diet of many people may not be an adequate source of minerals and microelements. In the case of borderline deficiency of a given element, even the relatively low intake of the element with drinking water may play a relevant protective role. This is because the elements are usually present in water as free ions and therefore, are more readily absorbed from water compared to food where they are mostly bound to other substances. Page 6

4. … High loss of calcium, magnesium and other essential elements in food prepared in low-mineral water
When used for cooking, soft water was found to cause substantial losses of all essential elements from food (vegetables, meat, cereals). Such losses may reach up to 60 % for magnesium and calcium or even more for some other microelements (e.g., copper 66 %, manganese 70 %, cobalt 86 %). In contrast, when hard water is used for cooking, the loss of these elements is much lower, and in some cases, an even higher calcium content was reported in food as a result of cooking (38-41). … Furthermore, the quantity of calcium that is supplemented is based on technical considerations (i.e., reducing the aggressiveness) rather than on health concerns. Possibly none of the commonly used ways of re-mineralization could be considered optimum, since the water does not contain all of its beneficial components. Current methods of stabilization are primarily intended to decrease the corrosive effects of demineralized water. Demineralized water that has not been remineralized, or low-mineral content water – in the light of the absence or substantial lack of essential minerals in it – is not considered ideal drinking water, and therefore, its regular consumption may not be providing adequate levels of some beneficial nutrients. International and national authorities responsible for drinking water quality should consider guidelines for desalination water treatment, specifying the minimum content of the relevant elements such as calcium and magnesium and TD page 12

Brief background information

We have included in this website some studies about the diet in the United States and Aruba. This information is from the WHO report 2009 , local Aruban study "Plan national Aruba 2009-2018" and the article of Life Extension Magazine.

It can be concluded that in the United States an average of 66% of the people don't meet the daily recommended intake of magnesium. See link under articles. The intake of Calcium and Magnesium should be around 2:1. Calcium can't be absorbed into the bone without Magnesium and Vitamine D.

The Aruban study concludes that the situation of obesity and overweight and not having the adequate diet is much worse than in the U.S.A. with its Standard American Diet (SAD).

The article Calcium bio availability intake of supplemental calcium being absorbed is between 10-40% . Consuming them as bulk pills is not recommended. For example Calcium supplements need acid and should be taken with a meal. Pills are manufactured via pressure, heat and may have paraffin coatings and fillers, making it more difficult to digest than ionic minerals in water. Chelated formula works better. SAD diet (processed food) has not enough minerals and makes the body acid which break downs the immune system.

One of the best mineral supplementation is mineral water. It is in ionic form and has high bio-availability. Health experts and researchers recommend 60-80 ppm calcium and 20-30 ppm magnesium per liter. (see article of F.Kozisek). Drinking during the day gives small quantities, instead of bulk intake via supplements.

The WHO is still reluctant to establish a minimum or maximum for these two minerals. WHO paper of 2009 discusses and mention the important consequences on health if people don't get enough calcium and magnesium. The very well documented reports of Dr F.Kozisek and Calderon R., Hunter P. (2009) , Catling L.A., Abubakar I., Lake I.R., Swift L., Hunter P. (2005) may change this finally. Certain countries have laws or implicated minerals in their national water supply. Dr.Kozisek mentions Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland.

The Netherlands has a drinkwaterbesluit, which stipulates that the pH has to be between 6-8.5 and the hardness of calcium and magnesium together between 100-250 ppm.

Israel recently started to ad Magnesium to its drinkingwater , which is made from a desalination process. The arguments, among them making minerals available to the people who don't ingest sufficient minerals, you can read in the following web link.

Paul Mason launched the website www.mgwater.com and requested the FDA to ad magnesium to bottled water and is requesting the WHO to apply guidelines.

National plan Aruba 2009-2018

Their page 21-23 mentions the following conclusions:

D. Excessive consumption of soft drinks and sugar-sweetened drinks

Several local studies have shown that the consumption of soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened drinks by children and youngsters is so high that problems related to i.a. sugar level, dentistry, and overweight have grown excessively. At the same time, the consumption of water has decreased considerably, especially among the most vulnerable group of the population, viz.: the children. Attention should also be paid to the sale of soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened drinks in and around our schools.

The consumption of water should be promoted, and the 'WEB' [Water and Electricity Company], in cooperation with the Richard Visser Institute, is working on the preparation of a national campaign to promote the consumption of water.


5.5. Conclusion

In general, it can be concluded that the average Aruban exercises insufficiently and has an unbalanced eating pattern. The information about what we eat and how much we exercise clearly indicates that the recommendations are not met in several respects. This notably applies to children, youngsters, the elderly, and underprivileged groups. It has also been established that the overweight and obesity figures are excessively high in Aruba compared to the United States and the Netherlands. What is even more disturbing is that most people do not realize that they are overweight or obese. It is the ambition of the National Plan Aruba 2 009-201 8 to rectify these shortcomings and to harmonize the physical activity and eating pattern of the Aruban and the recommendations. This was the starting point for deciding on the concrete details of the healthy food and physical activity objective for the period 2009-2018.

Calcium and Magnesium and Cancer

In Aruba, just as in other countries with the standard American diet (SAD), diseases such as diabetes type II, osteoporosis, cardiovascular problems, overweight, arthritis and chronic inflammation occur more and more often.

Cancer, especially breast- and prostate cancer and cardiovascular problems are increasing at an alarming rate. This has a huge impact on our families' health and consequently our families' finances.

Studies (see under articles) have shown that adequate Calcium and Magnesium intake give protection against several cancers.

Magnesium and Diabetes and Obesity

Dr Susan Volpe from University of Pennsylvania published an article about Magnesium deficiency and insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and overall health. She discusses the role adequate magnesium intake can play with diabetes patients and insulin resistance. The journal Advances in Nutrition has an impactfactor of 3.2
